Quick Holiday Treat Recipe: Muddy Buckies

I’ve been on a baking frenzy this season. Cabin Girl and I attempted to calculate it and figured I made around 1,000 servings of treats; cookies, breads, bars, and fudge. (Visited 43 times, 1 visits today)

Mom’s Peanut Butter Pie

It was Pi Day yesterday and the internet collectively lost its shit. I helped by making my husband’s favorite kind of pie: My mother in law found the recipe, called Mom’s Peanut Butter Pie, on a Western Family Cream Cheese package in the early 90s.  Captain requests it as his special dessert whenever I give him the option. So, with… Read more »

How to Avoid Common Food Allergens in the Drive Thru

How do you avoid common food allergens when you dine out? I’m on a pretty hardcore elimination diet to try and pinpoint what is causing The Kraken to break out in a massive rash. No dairy, soy, nuts, eggs, or fish. I’m also trying to avoid corn, as that’s a pretty big allergen, and watching my gluten intake (because it… Read more »

Early Thanksgiving from a Tiny Kitchen: Part 2

It was a success!!  Dinner was ready on time, and the only thing that turned out iffy was the dressing, which was a bit on the soggy side. I couldn’t decide which roasting recipe to follow, so I combined a few that I came across and the turkey turned out amazing!  I rubbed it with butter, sea salt, pepper, onion… Read more »

Early Thanksgiving from a Tiny Kitchen: Part 1

We’re having an early Thanksgiving dinner with Captain’s dad tomorrow, since we’ll be out of town for the actual holiday. This will be the first holiday we’ve celebrated with him since Cabin Girl was a baby. He’s been a bachelor for years, self sufficient, proud, and a pretty good cook. Needless to say, the people pleaser in me is practically… Read more »

Clean Eats, Clean Treats!

The hardest part of maintaining a clean eating lifestyle, for me, is definitely the sweets. I. Love. Sweets. Do you love sweets? Our family has tried quite a few clean treat recipes over the last year, and I’ve compiled a list of my favorites and Ashley from It’s Fitting invited me to share it, plus my very own No Bake… Read more »

Returning to GF/Paleo: Days 2 and 3

Welcome back!  If you missed the first 2 posts of the series, you can see them here and here. Day 1 was rough.  I felt like I was hungry all day long.  I need to start eating more raw veggies to fill up, but if they don’t sound good, I can’t eat them, or I get nauseous and won’t be… Read more »

Double Whammy; The news that shook me out of my SAD diet stupor.

Being pregnant is hard.  Being food conscious is hard, too.  Being pregnant AND food conscious?  SUCKS.My body has been craving simple carbs like mad.  Know what’s full of simple carbs?  Crap.  Conventional, boxed, overly processed CRAP.  In a battle between hormones, sciatic pain, pelvic pain, and food cravings, the cravings are the easiest to take care of.So instead of being… Read more »

Dessert before dinner after a week of *whoa.*

Sometimes, bad days happen.  Sometimes, a bad day happens, and it turns your week into a bad week.  Sometimes, bad days happen multiple times a week. This was one of those weeks.  Between the sudden death of an amazing woman I wish I could have become better friends with, my anxieties about our family dreams and our hopes for easing… Read more »

Paleo No-Bake Freezer Cookies

I am a sucker for No Bake cookies.  Normally made with peanut butter, chocolate, copious amounts of white sugar, butter, and oats.  Not-so healthy.  I could eat an entire batch by myself. I recently joined a clean eating group on Facebook through my Crossfit box and have taken one in a series of 4 ‘Master’ Paleo cooking classes.  At the… Read more »

20 toothless toddler Paleo/Primal friendly snacks

Mr. Monkey is 19 months old and has 6 teeth.  SIX.   What do you feed a child that wants what everyone else is having but can’t chew it all?!  Especially when what we’re having for snacks is stuff like raw veggies, dehydrated fruits and meats, and nuts and seeds? Now I know that gums are hard enough for kids… Read more »

Grassfed slow roasted beef (back and short) ribs and veggies; Plus a Kale sautée recipe for leftovers!

We were supposed to have a game night a while ago.  Some friends ended up sick, others couldn’t find someone to stay home with their youngest to get him into bed at a decent time, and a few had other plans.  No biggie. Except I had put a few packs of beef ribs in the fridge to thaw the night… Read more »

The 11 ways sushi is like sex

The other day I had sushi for the first time in YEARS.  Since before I was pregnant with Mr. Monkey.  I had a serious craving for it and there’s a great little conveyor belt place near our house that has smoked salmon and cream cheese, tempura shrimp, and chicken katsu rolls.  All definitely preggo safe.  So I indulged and IT… Read more »

Easy Peasy Gluten Free Lunch: 6-Toothed Toddler Approved!

Peeled, shredded zucchini in scrambled eggs, served with organic ketchup and avocado on a corn tortilla.   Notice how the tortilla ended up, veritably untouched, on the table? This one demanded seconds.  His tortilla also ended up being cast aside. I happened to like my eggs wrapped up nicely in the tortilla.  And they never noticed the zucchini. (Visited 9… Read more »

Experiment! A pledge to my children.

For a long time we’ve I’ve struggled with maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  Captain doesn’t care one way or another, as he doesn’t seem to have health issues related to the type and amounts of food he eats.  The kids and I, on the other hand, do have issues.  Gut issues, skin issues, behavioral issues…  Issues that I’ve been in and… Read more »

Primal breakfast with link to Lemon Raspberry Pancake recipe!

I felt the need for berries this morning! Technically, this is our second breakfast.  The kids do nothing but nag for food as soon as they get out of bed, so we usually give them a banana first thing and this morning they wanted apples as well. I think that’s one of the big things I really feel like I’m… Read more »

Back Into Freezer Cooking: Paleo Style: Part 2- Shopping Costs and Cooking with Eggplant Lasagna Tutorial

I’m hoping to make this an infinitely numbered series as I progress in my Paleo freezer cooking adventures. I took Cabin Girl shopping with me to give the Captain a break.  Hah.  Like being left with 3 and 1 1/2 year old boys is a break.  I have shopping rules for her; Use 1 finger to touch, no touching food,… Read more »

Back into Freezer Cooking: Paleo Style: Part 1- Find What Works and Plan It!

I’m hoping to make this an infinitely numbered series as I progress in my Paleo freezer cooking adventures. This year we’re focusing on becoming a more financially aware and responsible family.  Part of that, for me, means getting back into freezer cooking to stretch our monthly food budget.  It also means lots and lots of receipts and being on top… Read more »

Why I will indulge this holiday season.

Every year, it’s the same tune:  “I don’t want to gain 10 pounds this Christmas.”  “Oh, I better take something healthy to this party so there will be something there that I can eat.”  “Ugh, I shouldn’t eat this cookie…”  And yes, I’m guilty of singing all of them, plus many more.  But this year is going to be different….
